MU after Midnight
When most of campus has gone quiet, a different side of Marshall comes alive. Long after students head back to their dorms, overnight crews step in to keep the university running. From custodial staff moving through empty hallways to campus safety officers patrolling the grounds, these are the people who work while the rest of us sleep. Their routines may not make headlines, but without them, the campus would not be ready for the next day. For many, the late hours are not just a shift, but a commitment to keeping Marshall safe, clean, and moving forward even in the dark.
For this package, I wanted to shine a light on people who rarely get attention in the media. The ones who work through the night to keep campus running, and without them, our days would not go nearly as smooth. I spent time reaching out to janitorial staff and officers with MUPD, learning more about what their overnight shifts really look like. Filming at night was a new experience for me, but a fun one—it pushed me to think differently about how to use the light I had. I always start by getting my interviews first so I can capture b-roll that fits naturally with my soundbites, and this story really reinforced how important that process is. My creative process had its ups and downs, but I am proud with how the package turned out in the end.
